If your thumb is green enough to grow houseplants, you can absolutely grow veggies in an indoor garden. Grow edible flowers on your coffee table, or tomatoes in your bay window. You’ll feel so much more connected to your food when you grow it yourself. Plus, it just always tastes that much more delicious!
Grow houseplants and an indoor veggie garden
The best plants to grow in an apartment are the following foods listed. They don’t need pollinated, and really add to the urban jungle vibe! Mix your cherry tomato plant in next to your monstera. Drape your pothos over the shelves, and harvest the vines of your nasturtium to add to salads.
Best veggies for an indoor garden
- Carrots
- Cherry tomatoes (self-pollinate in the same flower, just gently flick or wiggle stems to ensure pollination)
- Greens like lettuce, spinach, and arugula
- Edible flowers like calendula, marigold, nasturtium, and violet
- Sugar snap peas (self-pollinate)
- Microgreens
Everything you need to grow a thriving indoor veggie garden
It can be challenging to know where to start with your garden, and even more difficult to know what will thrive in a small space like an apartment.
I’ve taken my own learnings from my fails and successes and packaged it up in a comprehensive choose-your-price course to walk you through everything you need to know to start a garden.
I include resources for all kinds of budgets, whether you’re a DIY queen or can shell out big bucks on fancy setups.
You already have the skills to create a container garden
If you can keep houseplants alive and thriving, you can grow a container garden in your apartment. Grow herbs, veggies, greens, edible flowers—you name it! Houseplants need care and often have varied growing conditions. Herbs and other foods are as easy to grow as those. Give ’em sun and plenty of water, and a great homemade compost.
Tips for container gardening in an apartment
Whenever you’re container gardening to grow vegetables or herbs indoors, it’s really helpful to have self-watering planters or clay watering spikes, just so you know they’re getting plenty to drink.
I also think that it’s really helpful to be strategic with themes for what you grow in an apartment. If you cook a lot, grow an indoor herb garden. Or if you’re vegan (for the environment, obv) then grow plenty of greens for year long salads. You can also grow cherry tomatoes in the center of a container with chives, oregano, and basil around it for a pasta garden.
Ideas for container gardening in an apartment
Growing an indoor garden can be easy
You already know that certain plants have different light needs. Most veggies and herbs need full sun (6-8 hrs direct sun daily). If you have a south-facing window, you’re golden. If you don’t get good direct light, grow lights can be helpful.
Hydroponics is the best apartment gardening idea out there
If you have an open wall in your apartment, even if it’s not by a window, you can grow a massive amount of food with a wall farm. It’s hydroponic with 3 tiers with grow lights to grow year-round organic veggies.
No more sad looking lettuce from the grocery store, you can grow whole heads of lettuce right in your kitchen.
My recommendation: Wall Farm with Herb and Salad Kit
What you need for a successful indoor veggie garden:
- Full sun, 6-8+ hours per day, or grow lights
- Good quality organic soil and compost
- Watering can + watering spikes and a clean upcycled wine or glass water bottle
- Good quality seeds (I would recommend buying them or saving seeds from organic locally grown produce for the best quality veggies)
- Transplants/Starts (these may not be available to you year round)
- Patience and love 💚
Create an indoor garden and grow fresh produce year-round
To get the most bang for your buck, grow nutrient-dense microgreens under a grow light or by your sunniest window. They’ll be ready to harvest in just a few days, and are really great for your health.
I also really love growing fresh herbs because I use them so much when I cook. Rosemary is one of my favorites. It will grow into a lush, beautiful bush. Let it grow and up-pot it every spring or so. Once it’s to a good size where it has strong roots, pick a big, fancy container. Plant your rosemary in there and let it grow forever! It even gets beautiful blue flowers once it’s established.
I hope this was helpful to you! I have so many houseplants I love, but one of my greatest joys is growing my own food and herbs in my apartment. Let me know how it goes for you 🌻
